Woodworking Storage

Arguably, woodworking storage is the main problem for any woodworker in his shop. That is, inadequate organization and space needed for fluent workflow and safety. When a shop gets too messy, it can often take even more time to find a tool than it does to actually use it. This is particularly true since many woodworkers’ shops are their garages, which may have limited space to begin with. Besides, even the largest workspace can become cluttered. It is the proper mindset that allows things to get organized.
One method to help get your woodworking storage on the right track is to attach your tools to your workbench. Unfortunately, it is quite possible that if you have enough tools, securing them all to the workbench will leave you with no workspace to work. A good trick for this is to attach a bunch of tools to a piece of 3/4″ plywood. Then all you have to do is secure the plywood to the workbench with C-clamps and remove it when you are finished.
It would also be a good idea to set aside one wall of your shop for a heavy duty set of wall mounted shelves. Use large storage containers or crates also, and be sure to label them so that you don’t have to go digging through all of them to find out whats inside them. This helps keep all your stuff out of the way and organized. You can find good shelves and containers like this at any big hardware store.
While this may sound like a lot of work and maybe some money too, just keep in mind that a little bit of time spent getting organized now will save you way more time later when you are not searching all over the shop for that certain tool. But the part that is most important is all up to you. You have to be committed to clean up your shop at the end of every work day and always put a tool back where it goes immediately when finished with it. If you don’t maintain this idea, the shop will always return back to its unorganized state and all of this is for nothing.
