When finishing a woodworking project, whether it be sanding, staining or whatever else you may need to do, do not rush it. Take your time; the more you rush the more chance you have of making mistakes and ruining the project you spent so much time building.
When mixing putty from a powder, many people wonder what to mix it in. I like to use a plastic zip lock bag. All you do is pour the powder in the bag, add your water and then knead it until it mixes. To apply the putty just cut a small hole in the corner of the bag and squeeze it out.
Sometimes you need something to scrape the smallest of spaces, and the typical cabinet scraper just will not cut it. So a good trick is to take a blade from an old utility knife and grind all 4 edges flat. The two short edges of the blade will help you get into even the toughest places.
For applying stain in your design pieces a good tip is to take a wooden handle and drill to small holes in the end of it and insert a pipe cleaner. Dip the piper cleaner in your stain and use it to apply the stain to your hard to reach places.
A good alternative to your commercially sold tack cloth which can sometimes leave a residue on your project is to take a can of end dust furniture spray and spray it on a lint free cloth. Once that cloth gets too dirty to even shake off, you can throw it in the wash and reuse it again.
A good way to stain small objects is to pour stain into a small pan and then take 1/4″ hardware cloth and cut and then bend it so that the it almost reaches the bottom of the pan and then has enough to overhang the pan to act as handles. Dip the small parts into the pan and the remove and a couple small pieces of wood across the pan and let all the excess stain drip off.
You can cut your shelf finishing time in half by building a frame out of 2×4′ that is a little bit longer than the length of your shelves. Drill two small pilot holes in the end of each shelf and screw in a 2″ finishing screw. Leave each screw sticking out about one inch and set the shelves on the frame you built. Stain the one side of shelf and then flip over using the screws and stain the other side.
