Used Moulders – Everything You Need to Know

What are Moulders?
A moulder-also referred to as a wood shaper-is a woodworking machine that uses profiled cutters to shape wood. A moulder’s blades are typically secured in a cutterhead that is mounted onto the machine’s horizontal shaft, although some moulders are designed with the blades bolted directly onto the shaft. In addition to serving as moulders, wood moulding machines can also serve as wood planers, in which case the machine is referred to as a moulder/planer. Woodworkers that desire a moulder and a planer in one unit must be sure to purchase an official moulder/planer, as planing capabilities are not inherent to a classic moulder. Although moulders come in a variety of sizes and capacities, they come in two basic types: single head moulders, which have a horizontal cutting head only and are generally the most affordable; and multi head moulders, which contain as many as four cutter heads: a top horizontal head, a bottom horizontal head, a right vertical side head and a left vertical side head. A single head moulder generally works fine for lower capacity woodworking operations. But its slower feed and inability to cut more than one surface at a time generally makes it prohibitive for high production operations, particularly those that focus on furniture that requires detailed, deep cuts.
Is it Sensible to Buy Used Moulders?
Whether or not to buy a used moulder typically depends on two factors: its sticker price and the quality of its construction. Some machines are designed for domestic and lower level commercial use, while others are designed for industrial grade use. Naturally, the latter are more expensive, and, unlike domestic and low level commercial models, are designed to perform like new for years on end. Therefore, purchasing a used industrial grade moulding machine can be a sensible purchase, as long as the buyer has the space to accommodate it and has a production demand that necessitates industrial wood working machines.
How Do You Assess the Quality of Used Moulders?
Assessing the quality of a used moulding machine follows the same four-step process as assessing the quality of other industrial grade used woodworking machines. The first step is to only consider machines that are sold by professional sellers of used woodworking machinery (e.g. eBay merchants and company auctions should be avoided). The second step is to make sure that a seller is without unresolved customer complaints at the Better Business Bureau (BBB). The third step is to request a copy of a machine’s official logged service record to ensure that it was regularly maintained by its previous owner(s). The fourth step is to conduct a first person inspection of the machine to assess its overall wear, or have a trusted third party perform the inspection for you. By following these steps, you should arrive at a used machine that operates like new for years to come.

Tips and Trick to Finish Easy Woodworking Projects

When finishing a woodworking project, whether it be sanding, staining or whatever else you may need to do, do not rush it. Take your time; the more you rush the more chance you have of making mistakes and ruining the project you spent so much time building.
When mixing putty from a powder, many people wonder what to mix it in. I like to use a plastic zip lock bag. All you do is pour the powder in the bag, add your water and then knead it until it mixes. To apply the putty just cut a small hole in the corner of the bag and squeeze it out.
Sometimes you need something to scrape the smallest of spaces, and the typical cabinet scraper just will not cut it. So a good trick is to take a blade from an old utility knife and grind all 4 edges flat. The two short edges of the blade will help you get into even the toughest places.
For applying stain in your design pieces a good tip is to take a wooden handle and drill to small holes in the end of it and insert a pipe cleaner. Dip the piper cleaner in your stain and use it to apply the stain to your hard to reach places.
A good alternative to your commercially sold tack cloth which can sometimes leave a residue on your project is to take a can of end dust furniture spray and spray it on a lint free cloth. Once that cloth gets too dirty to even shake off, you can throw it in the wash and reuse it again.
A good way to stain small objects is to pour stain into a small pan and then take 1/4″ hardware cloth and cut and then bend it so that the it almost reaches the bottom of the pan and then has enough to overhang the pan to act as handles. Dip the small parts into the pan and the remove and a couple small pieces of wood across the pan and let all the excess stain drip off.
You can cut your shelf finishing time in half by building a frame out of 2×4′ that is a little bit longer than the length of your shelves. Drill two small pilot holes in the end of each shelf and screw in a 2″ finishing screw. Leave each screw sticking out about one inch and set the shelves on the frame you built. Stain the one side of shelf and then flip over using the screws and stain the other side.

Woodworking Plans – Dog House Tips

If you’re new to self build woodworking plans, dog house projects are an excellent place to begin. I am going to show you some simple building tips that will save you some time and will make your dogs new home that bit more comfortable. It’s never fun undoing good work because of easily avoided mistakes so let us get started.
Plans – Dog House Tips
1. Make sure the house floor is raised a few inches off ground. It only takes a couple of heavy showers before your dog finds himself with an indoor pool in his new house so be sure to keep a few inches between the ground and the floor. This will also keep things nice and cool for him in the summertime, especially if you live in a area with a very warm climate. It also aids hygiene within the house itself and can help you with cleaning.
2. When you are installing the roof, be sure to put hinges on the roof for easy cleaning. Surprisingly few plans include this feature which I have found to be a life saver when it comes to keeping the dog house clean and tidy. No need for getting down on your hands and knees and reaching in to get at his bedding, with a hinged roof, the job is quick, easy and over with in seconds. Just be sure to hinge the roof at a sturdy part of the house frame as a slight wind can easily catch the roof, over extending the hinges and doing damage to the walls.
If you’re starting out with DIY woodworking plans, dog house projects are a really good way to get your skills up to speed. With these cautionary tips in mind, you should be confident to get out and build your dog the home he deserves.

Dowel Rods for Kitchen Use

Without a doubt, when one thinks of dowel rods, woodworking and crafts immediately come to mind. This is because dowel rods are commonly and routinely used in woodworking. However, the uses of dowel rods are much more versatile than some may realize. In fact, they can be quite handy in the kitchen in traditional and non-traditional ways. Let’s examine some possibilities for uses of dowel rods in the kitchen.
Some of the traditional, woodworking-related ways dowel rods can be ideal for kitchen uses include the ability to make certain items from scratch. For instance, kitchen utensils are simple projects that can be completed easily and with a minimal investment of both time and expense. Consider trying a hand at creating wooden spoons, ladles, or honey drippers. Dowels can be used as handles for each of these projects. Once completed, mount dowels to a strip of wood, paint or stain, and hang your new, ready-to-use utensils near your stove top for convenience and easy access.
Easily make a dish drying rack and add a natural, wooden element to your kitchen in the process. Another simple project to consider is a paper towel dispenser. With some creativity and imagination, these can be made either as standing, vertical units, which can be placed on kitchen counters, or as elongated, horizontal units, which can be mounted under cabinets. Because of their relative simplicity, each of these would also be an excellent, but simple project for the beginning woodworker.
For a more experienced woodworker, dowels can be used in the repair or upgrade of kitchen seating, as, quite commonly, the rungs of chairs are formed from dowel. Consider adding dowels with grooves or hooks to kitchen cabinets to hang coffee mugs or teacups and free up some storage space. Or, use dowels to create a plate rack inside your kitchen cabinets for the same reason. A piece of wood with simple dowel or more ornate shaker pegs would make a great hanging rack for aprons, oven mitts, and pot holders.
There are some less traditional, but equally resourceful uses for dowel in the kitchen as well.
When it comes to baking, dowels can be used to support tiered cakes. Because they vary in size, they may also be purchased and used as an accurate guide for measuring thickness when rolling out dough. For those who enjoy making pasta from scratch, another creative use is for pasta drying. Create a rack for your homemade pastas.
Use a wood dowel to circularly wrap cloth napkins and avoid wrinkling and ironing altogether! If kitchen drawer space is limited, consider making a hanging or countertop linen rack. This is a functional tool, but can also compliment or accent your kitchen d?cor. If kitchen drawer space is available, consider using dowels to create compartments for typical supplies, such as pens or pencils, sticky notes, tape, scissors, magnets, or coupons.
Depending on the bulk (weight) of the material, a sturdy hardwood dowel may be used in kitchen window treatments. Less hardy dowels may be considered for lighter valances.
There is so much more that can be done with dowels than many may ever imagine. Use some of these ideas to make simple and cost-effective improvements to your kitchen, and let an ordinary wood dowel do the extraordinary for you.

Do it Yourself Woodworking Projects

Spring is fast coming and it’s time to start planning on summer woodworking projects. Completing any type of project brings great pleasure and satisfaction. Making use of your own abilities, you build the items you desire and lower your expenses while accomplishing a goal. That way, you get exactly what you want and you save a lot of money.
It’s simple and easy to look for woodworking projects and plans for almost any project through the web. The cost goes from totally free to pretty expensive. Generally, an online business that provides plans for free will try to sell you better quality projects at high cost. Unfortunately, most of the free plans & projects are outdated or of poor quality. For having tried these plans many times in the past, I strongly suggest you forget about using them. It’s a big waste of time and a great frustration builder. However, one can find a few exceptions to this fact and be satisfied with free plans. Do a web search pertaining to the project you want to build and examine the plans carefully. Should you decide to buy a woodworking project online, make sure you have a 100% money back guarantee. I lost a lot of money on plans that did not fulfill my requirements and I had no way of getting reimbursed.
Do it yourself projects can also be found throughout magazines. Popular Woodworking, American Woodworking Magazine, and Modern Woodworking are among the most popular. Recent publications usually feature current projects and plans for the latest current design. Unfortunately, it may not be easy to find the plan for the project you are looking for. Once again, it is time consuming as you certainly will need to explore loads of back issues to put your hand on the plan you are seeking for.
If you are looking for older woodworking projects and plans, you might be able to find them in your public library. Most of them carry loads of old magazines that are of public interest. Look in the “mechanics type” section to find issues from the 1950s or earlier. However, do plan to spend hours at the library if you want to go through that kind of research.
Magazines such as Popular Mechanics, Science and Mechanics and Mechanix Illustrated, all dated from before1964, left their copyright expire therefore allowing their woodworking projects and plans to enter public domain. Once in such domain, a product can not be copyrighted by absolutely anyone. Therefore, any of these projects and plans may be reprinted by anyone for any purpose, even for resale. It explains why woodworking projects and plans from these old magazines are commonly offered free or for sale on the web.
But looking for the right woodworking project and plan in magazines is time consuming and often becomes frustrating when you can not find what you are looking for. Personally, I once and for all solved that problem of looking for woodworking projects and plans. I now own a library that contains close to 15,000 plans in hundreds different categories. I have achieved many projects from the Woodworking4Home fabulous collection of woodworking projects and plans. I am very pleased with the quality of the projects and plans. Besides, my purchase gives me life access to woodworking projects and plans, video tutorials and a precious online access to a professional woodworker that helps me with any difficulty I might experience during a project. Those are my guarantees to success on any woodworking project I realize.
What more do you ask for?

Great Drill Press Choices for the Home Wood Shop

Walter Meier Manufacturing produces an excellent line of power tools under the Jet brand. They range from inexpensive home tools to industrial production equipment. After looking into woodworking tools for a new shop, I discovered Jet tools and was surprised I hadn’t known about them before – Walter Meier has been in business almost 75 years and have a loyal following. Later in this article I’ll be discussing Jet drill presses for the home shop. The Jet line is known for ruggedness, durability, and accuracy at moderate prices.
The proper choice of any woodworking power tool depends on the type of work you’ll be doing and the available space. If space is limited you’ll probably want to go with a bench top model as they can be mounted to roll out of the way when they’re not in use. Free standing presses are generally heavier and really can’t be mounted so that they’re both stable and movable. Depending on the work you’re doing you may need a large swing (drilling range) and work table, otherwise a smaller swing can give you a smaller press. Horse power is also an important factor. Generally the more the better, but more powerful machines tend to be larger. You may also want to consider variable speed. Most drill presses allow you to select from a dozen or so fixed speeds by changing which pulleys the belt is on. A variable-speed drives allows you to continuously vary speed by simply turning a knob.
Jet makes a dozen or more models of drill presses with prices ranging from a few hundred to several thousand dollars, so I’ll be discussing only the three most popular moderately-priced models here.
The Jet JPD-15M drill press is mid-sized and is the most popular model. It has a 15″ swing and it’s designed for bench top mounting. The motor is a hefty A horsepower, and this model is known for its power, rigidity, and durability. Nothing fancy, just a solid tool. The 15M has 16 belt-selectable speeds ranging from 200 to 3,600 rpm. There’s an extra-large 10 x 13″ work surface, and this model includes a 5/8″ chuck. The JPD-15MF is nearly identical, except that it’s free-standing (floor mount).
If you need something smaller, consider the Jet JPD-12. This model is a 12″ bench top unit. The base is only 11.5 x 16.5 inches. But to get the smaller size you loose over half the power – the JPD-12 is a 1/3 HP press. On the other hand, you do gain a few nice features. This model offers variable speed (530 – 3100 RPM), but adjustment is mechanical. To go with the variable speed, you also get a digital RPM readout. The included laser X drilling guide is also an attractive feature. I’ve often wanted this feature on my current press for free-hand drilling. The work table is a bit small, at 9.5 inches square, though there is a retractable roller extension to help support larger work. This model also comes with a 5/8″ chuck, which is plenty big given the horsepower.
The Jet JPD-17DX is a 17″ free-standing press and a really good choice provided you have the space. Like the 15M it has a hefty A HP motor. This model is specifically intended for woodworking. It features a spindle-mounted dual laser cross guide for precision positioning, plus there’s precision stops. This makes it easy to free-drill to consistent depths and spacings. The work table is nice and large, at 14 x 18.” Like the 15M, there’s 16 belt-changed speeds ranging from 200 to 3620 RPM and the press includes a 5/8″ chuck.
Other Jet models for home shops go up to 20″ swing and 1 horsepower. A few have true electronic variable-speed control. All the Jet drill press models mentioned above get consistently good customer reviews, typically noting their ruggedness and durability as well as their being rigid and accurate.
