There are hundreds, maybe even thousands of different types of chairs. Each having their own style and purpose. Most of the common types you see today are the modern type, such as the task, manager’s and executive chairs. This article is not about those types. It is about the wooden masterpieces that stand the test of time. From Adirondack style to Morris style. Chairs have as many different names as they do designs. Let’s take a look at what you’ll need to build a few of them.
The Adirondack chair is named after the mountain range in upstate New York. It is made of roughshawn tanalised pine, commonly used to build fences. It is primarily an outdoor furniture piece but can also be used indoors especially during the cold winter months.
Materials needed:
Chair frame, Back spacer, Leg, Lower back frame, Backslats, Arm brace, Seat Slats, Upper back frame and a front spacer.
The Morris chair is one of the most hard to find chairs of the modern day. There were only a few manufacturers in existence who made the chair and they have since stopped production of it. Many say it is one of the most comfortable living room chairs ever built. From a woodworking perspective, what’s wonderful about this type of chair is that it can be built inexpensively and in less than a day – even by a beginner.
Materials needed:
2 front legs and 2 back legs, 2 sides, a front rail and 2 side rails, a back rail and 2 slide slats, arms, cleats and a back rod.
These two types of chairs offer the indoor and outdoor pleasure and relaxation we deserve. Best of all, it doesn’t take a master woodworker or a lot of money to build these beaties.
