Essential Woodworking Safety Tips

Health and safety in the workshop is very important and if you fail to make sure that you are safe whenever you are working with dangerous tools and equipment then it can have disastrous circumstances.
Most of these safety tips are just basic common sense but it’s surprising how many people fail to take note of these tips and risk serious injury to themselves and others. When you start to make yourself more aware of doing these things every time you are in the workshop it will eventually become like second nature to you and you will do them without even having to think about it.
Wear The Proper Protective Equipment
Some protective equipment you should always be wearing when working with machines, like goggles for example to protect your eyes, eyes are very delicate and it only takes a little scratch from something to do serious damage. Other safety equipment is only needed when using specific tools or machines so you should always try to keep the equipment next to the machine or tools that you need it for, that way you will find it much easier to remember to put them on.
Don’t Drink Alcohol In The Workshop
This may sound like a silly thing to say but lots of guys like having a few beers while working on their latest woodworking project. But this can be very dangerous when it comes to using machinery and equipment that can seriously harm you and the slightest lack of concentration could result in a very serious accident.
Wear Appropriate Clothing
Wearing baggy clothing is very dangerous in the workshop because things can easily get caught up in machines, so just make sure that you are wearing sensible clothing that won’t get in the way and also remember to take off any jewelery as well.
Keep Your Hands Away From Blades
You should never put your hand near any sort of blade while it is in motion. If you have to grab or move something from near a blade then the best thing to do is to wait until the machine has completely stopped and even then, if it is possible for you to use another piece of wood or something like that to retrieve the object then that is the best thing to do.
This is something that many people fail to do but in my opinion is something that MUST be done. All it takes is for something to nudge the switch while your changing the blade and you would have a serious problem indeed. It’s not going to hurt you to turn things off properly for a few seconds and it could very seriously hurt you if you don’t bother doing it.
